Plant-based diets are increasingly popular, with more and more people seeking to improve their diet quality by limiting the amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat, and increasing the amount of fibre they consume, by getting most or all of their nutrition from fruits, vegetables, legumes, tubers, seeds, nuts, etc. Such diets have been linked to numerous health benefits, including healthy weight management, reduced inflammation, improved heart health, and lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
This is all pretty straightforward in theory, but the practice is where it can get complicated or difficult for those who aren’t as familiar with the nutritional profiles of plant-based foods. For example, if you’re looking to optimise protein intake, you may want to opt for foods like tofu, tempeh, seitan, or legumes, which aren’t as commonplace in standard Western cuisine. Also, due to the differences in nutritional profiles, those consuming a plant-based diet may need to place more focus on attaining adequate amounts of certain nutrients like vitamin B12 to avoid any easily preventable deficiencies.
